Assembly pointers for variable binding in networks of spiking

چکیده
5 Currently existing neural network models lack an important computational capability of 6 networks of neurons in the brain: the capability to reason on an abstract level, and to structure 7 information according to abstract categories. While there is hardly anything known about 8 underlying processes for that in the human brain, experimental evidence for the organization 9 of an important prerequisite for abstract reasoning has recently been found: for binding words 10 to syntactic categories, such as subject or object. Based on these experimental data from fMRI 11 recordings we propose a model for binding of semantic content to variables that is consistent 12 with these data and provides new functions to neural network computations. We provide a 13 proof of principle that this model can be implemented even in networks of spiking neurons. 14 It enables structured information retrieval and copying of information without routing, and 15 provides a basis for the emulation of more demanding cognitive computations in networks of 16 spiking neurons. Assembly pointers for variable binding in networks of spiking neurons
We propose a model for binding of variables such as the thematic role of a word in a sentence or episode (e.g., agent or patient), to concrete fillers (e.g., a word or concept). Our model is based on recent experimental data about corresponding processes in the human brain. One source of information are electrode recordings from the human brain, which suggest that concepts are represented in th...
متن کاملVariable Binding through Assemblies in Spiking Neural Networks
We propose a model for the binding of variables to concrete fillers in the human brain. The model is based on recent experimental data about corresponding neural processes in humans. First, electrode recordings from the human brain suggest that concepts are represented in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) through sparse sets of neurons (assemblies). Second, fMRI recordings from the human brain sug...
متن کاملKeynote 1: Binding through assemblies in the human brain: Recent data and models
Recent experimental data has provided valuable insights into the representation of concepts and language in the human brain. Electrode recordings from the human brain suggest that concepts are represented in the medial temporal lobe (MTL) through sparse sets of neurons (assemblies). Further, fMRI recordings from the human brain suggest that specific subregions of the temporal cortex are dedicat...
متن کاملSimultaneous unsupervised and supervised learning of cognitive functions in biologically plausible spiking neural networks
We present a novel learning rule for learning transformations of sophisticated neural representations in a biologically plausible manner. We show that the rule, which uses only information available locally to a synapse in a spiking network, can learn to transmit and bind semantic pointers. Semantic pointers have previously been used to build Spaun, which is currently the world’s largest functi...
متن کاملBiologically Plausible, Human-scale Knowledge Representation
Several approaches to implementing symbol-like representations in neurally plausible models have been proposed. These approaches include binding through synchrony (Shastri & Ajjanagadde, ), "mesh" binding (van der Velde & de Kamps, ), and conjunctive binding (Smolensky, ). Recent theoretical work has suggested that most of these methods will not scale well, that is, that they cannot encode stru...
